Hubble Space Telescope’s Glorious Past and The Uncertain Future
March 30, 2008
The Hubble Space Telescope is named after Edwin Hubble.
As you know that even though the idea of making the telescope was conceived way back in the year 1946 it was only in the year 1990 that it was built and launched by NASA. The astronomers behind the building of this Hubble space telescope believed that this would lead to many a great discoveries because of this telescope they would be able to look into the vast skies and answer many a questions that would arise about this universe and about the different planets and life out there if any.
This making and launching of the Hubble space telescope was a very thrilling idea for these great astronauts because this telescope helped them to get a better look into outer space so that they could learn more about the universe. People felt thrilled that they would finally be able to know about the black holes that would be found and also learn about the past i.e., about the prehistoric times or say the evolution of mankind and also about the future of mankind.
A little about the History of the Hubble space telescope
The construction of this telescope began in the year 1977 and the work went on till the year 1985 with many a idea given and many a ideas rejected and millions of dollars spent along with many a sleepless nights spent in discussing and planning the design of this telescope, and finally the D-Day arrived and the date was April 25, 1990 when finally the Hubble space telescope was launched into space. The pictures that were captured by this telescope were not up to mark initially NASA worked on it to fix the mirror, which was too flat on one edge. It was during the year 1993 that NASA added yet another camera to capture more pictures with a better clarity of the pictures. Many an old instrument along with its parts was replaced in the year 1997. It was in the month of October 1997 that NASA decided that it would allow this Hubble space telescope to be in space till the year 2010 because there was so much to learn about astronomy as well as the space. There are a few more years left for this telescope to send in the images that it has captured for these astronauts to learn about the universe before it will be called back to earth.
The Hubble Space Telescope as seen today:
If we were to see the Hubble space telescope as of today, it has given to the world more than expected with a great number of images that has helped the world to make a great many discoveries. On the contrary we should thank this Hubble space telescope for today we know many a secrets of the space like the dark matter which is also known as energy, is simply matter that we are not able to see with our naked eyes. Today we also know that only about 10% of the universe is actually visible.
Today whatever we have learnt about the universe is all because of this Hubble Space Telescope and thus this telescope has an important place in the heart of the scientist as well as the astronomers because before it was launched these scientist and astronomers were able to learn about space by studying starlight and the only pictures that they had were those that were taken from Earth. The Hubble space telescope was a major step forward in astronomy, this space telescope has led to a number of discoveries and spectacular and breath taking pictures. The pictures captured by this telescope are actually 20times larger than the original picture. Often the enlarged picture do not have the effect as the original picture but then the picture taken from this telescope is still very clear, colorful and breathtaking.
Summary:
Though the Hubble space telescope met with problems in the initial stages of its making but then today it is because of this telescope that man has made a number of discoveries about the universe and though there are few more years before we will have bid a tearful farewell to this wonderful invention of mankind till then this space telescope will help solve many a mysteries of the universe and help mankind quench his thirst for knowledge.
Got something to say?
